Lordina Foundation brings Christmas Joy to orphans

Mrs Lordina Dramani Mahama and her Lordina Foundation on Tuesday donated various items to the Osu Children’s Home and Christ Faith Foster Home in Adenta, continuing her long-standing tradition of sharing with the less privileged in society over the last two decades and more.

The donated items included bags of rice, cartons of cooking oil, canned tomatoes, beverages such as Milo and Nido, spaghetti, boxes of Tom Brown, sugar, biscuits, drinks, toffees, tissue paper, detergents, and sanitary pads, among other things others.

Mrs Mahama, wife of President-Elect John Dramani Mahama, has contributed to the development of deprived children and women in rural and urban areas by promoting quality health care, education, and general well-being.

The Lordina Foundation has adopted orphanages across the country, which it supports with food and non-food items. It also appreciates the staff of the homes.

Pastor Samuel Boateng Sarpong, a member of the Foundation’s board, presented the items on behalf of Mrs Mahama and conveyed her goodwill message to the children and staff of the two homes.

The Home Manager of Osu Children’s Home, Mr Reindorf Dartey, expressed their excitement for the pre-Christmas donation, noting that the facility has consistently received support from the Lordina Foundation and the Mahama family.

“In my six years here, we have always looked forward to hearing from our mother, Mrs. Lordina Mahama, during the festive season, so we are very happy you have come here today,” he stated.

Mr Adu Amoako, Manager of Christ Faith Foster Home, also thanked Mrs Mahama for consistently including them in her Christmas plans. He took the opportunity to extend seasonal greetings to the President-Elect, Mrs Mahama, and the family, praying that the new year brings them joy and many smiles, just as they have brought to the motherless and fatherless in their facility.

At least twice a year, including December, the Lordina Foundation presents donations to selected orphanages across the country to celebrate the Christmas season with the less fortunate in society.

John Mahama and wife renovate Hohoe Adabraka Health Centre

John Mahama and wife renovate Hohoe Adabraka Health Center

Former First Lady Lordina Dramani Mahama has inaugurated a renovated and expanded health centre at Hohoe Adabraka in the Volta Region.

The dilapidated structure that once housed the facility has been transformed into a modern health centre, providing additional service space for patients and healthcare workers.

The renovated facility now features two separate wards, fully equipped with modern hospital beds and accessories, two consulting rooms with examination beds, a laboratory, a storeroom, and a spacious waiting area, complete with a reception desk and visitor chairs.

“My heart is full of gratitude and joy because what was once a shabby, run-down structure has been transformed into a modern facility equipped to provide affordable and accessible healthcare to this community,” Mrs Mahama stated at a ceremony in Hohoe on Tuesday.

She explained that although the NDC parliamentary candidate for Hohoe had requested medical equipment, she and her husband, President John Dramani Mahama, reviewed images of the centre and decided to renovate and expand it for the benefit of the people.

“I am sure you are all surprised at how we have transformed that death trap of a building into what we see here today,” she remarked.

Highlighting the importance of healthcare, Mrs Mahama referenced key innovative health initiatives outlined in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) 2024 manifesto, including Free Primary Health Care, which aims to alleviate the financial burden that often deters families from seeking medical attention.

She also celebrated her husband’s generosity in financing the project through the Lordina Foundation as his 66th birthday gift to the people of Hohoe.

“This health centre will not only serve as a place of healing but also symbolise hope, empowerment, and John Mahama’s love for the people of Hohoe and Ghana,” she added.

Mrs Mahama conveyed a message of hope and prosperity for all Ghanaians under a John Mahama administration, urging the people to vote for him and all NDC parliamentary candidates in the upcoming elections.

A representative of the Lordina Foundation, Pastor Kwame Boateng-Sarpong, praised Mr. and Mrs. Mahama for their philanthropy and visionary leadership. He also acknowledged the foundation’s efforts to improve the lives of women and children, particularly in underserved communities, through enhanced healthcare, education, and overall well-being.

“This initiative aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 3 and underscores Mrs Mahama’s commitment to ensuring that every individual, regardless of location or circumstance, has access to quality healthcare,” he stated.

Jessica Honya-Tsiewu, the medical officer in charge of the facility, highlighted the previous lack of space and adequate medical equipment, which hindered healthcare delivery.

“This situation compelled us to admit only male patients at times because it was medically inappropriate to house both genders in the same room, especially in a Muslim community that disapproves of such arrangements,” she explained.

Madam Honya-Tsiewu expressed her excitement about the newly commissioned project, calling it a game-changer because it will add separate male and female wards, which is crucial for healthcare delivery in the community.

The Lordina Foundation, in addition to the expansion works at the facility, donated essential medical supplies to the Centre. The items included hospital beds, an electric suction unit, delivery beds, baby cots, baby cribs, boxes of latex gloves, syringes, and a refrigerator.

Established in 2014, the original facility had deteriorated over the past decade. The Lordina Foundation’s renovations mark a significant step toward improving healthcare access in the region.

Lordina Mahama Worships with E.P Church Women’s Ministry

Former First Lady Mrs Lordina Dramani Mahama on Sunday joined the Women’s Ministry of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church for a thanksgiving service in Ho to commemorate its 40th anniversary.

Mrs Mahama, the Special Guest of Honour, emphasised the integral role women play in society. She spoke about their role in raising children and building good homes, resonating with the anniversary theme, ‘Caring for God’s Creation; The Role of Women’s Ministry’.

She urged women to consider their responsibilities as sacred duties to God and humanity, reinforcing the value and respect they deserve.

She highlighted the remarkable achievements of many Ghanaian women who have, over the years, shattered the glass ceiling and risen to prominence, such as Rt. Hon. Joyce Adeline Bamford-Addo, the first female Speaker of Ghana’s Parliament. These women, Mrs Mahama noted, serve as a powerful inspiration for young girls and women, demonstrating that with determination and resilience, any goal can be achieved.

She commended her husband, John Dramani Mahama, for his confidence in women and for selecting Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang for the second time as his running mate and, hopefully, the first female Vice President of Ghana.

She added that Mr Mahama has demonstrated inclusiveness and trust in women as equally capable candidates for leadership through his actions.

Mrs Mahama, the founder and president of the Lordina Foundation, advocated for equal opportunities for women to reach their full potential, asserting that women are more than capable of excelling at any level of leadership.

She urged women to lead the effort to promote peace and unity before, during and after the December elections. According to her, violence and conflicts must be avoided, as history has shown that women and children are most affected by electoral violence.

The leadership of the Church offered prayers for the Mahama family and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) ahead of the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections.

Founder of Lordina Foundation gifts Ampoma and Bodom water systems on her 60th birthday

Former First Lady and President of the Lordina Foundation, Mrs. Lordina Dramani Mahama, has provided the Ampoma and Bodom communities in the Bono East Region with water supply systems to celebrate her 60th birthday.

Mrs. Mahama, born on 6th March 1963, decided to solve the water situation in Ampoma and Bodom, her maternal and paternal hometowns, by constructing mechanised borehole systems to serve the two separate communities.

Inaugurating the Community Water Supply Systems ahead of her 60th birthday, Mrs. Mahama emphasised the importance of community ownership and why the people and their chiefs must work together to ensure an effective management of the water systems.

The President of the Lordina Foundation noted the importance of having quality water in communities, adding that good drinking water helps promote better hygiene, improved public health and a clean environment.

The Ampoma Community Water Supply System has a total of three water stations and six storage tanks with a capacity of 30,000 litres. Each of the stations has eight (8) pipes to serve the community. The Bodom Community Water Supply System, on the other hand, has one water station made up of ten (10) pipe stands and a storage capacity of 30,000 litres.

Mrs. Mahama, after the inauguration, handed over the facilities to a seven-member management committee for each of the communities, who will be responsible for its efficient, effective, and accountable management.

This is just one of the many philanthropic gestures by Mrs. Mahama and her husband across the country, over the years. In 2022, to commemorate their 30th anniversary of marriage, Mrs. Lordina Mahama and her husband constructed and furnished a 45-bed Maternity and Children’s Ward for the Bole District Hospital. The 865 square metre facility has a standby generator, a Neo-natal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) with three incubators, five phototherapy units and baby weighing scales among others.

Lordina Foundation takes breast and cervical cancer screening to the church

Lordina Foundation takes breast and cervical cancer screening to the church

Saturday November 20, 2021

The Lordina Foundation on Saturday organized a breast and cervical cancer screening exercise for female members of the Ringway Estates Assemblies of God Church in Accra.

The beneficiaries were given a health talk by Dr. Julia Padiki Derban of Total House Clinic who facilitated the screening exercise. They were also examined for breast cancer and underwent a pap smear test.

The pap test is the procedure used to test for cervical cancer in women and involves the collection of cells from the cervix. According to Dr. Julia Padiki Derban, an early detection of both breast and cervical cancer guarantees a greater chance of cure.

The HPV Information Centre said in an October 2021 report that about 4.3% of Ghanaian women are estimated to habour cervical HPV- 16/18 infections at a given time. “55.6% of invasive cervical cancers are attributed to HPVs 16 or 18”, the report added.

Former First Lady Lordina Dramani Mahama who is the President of the Lordina Foundation has been undertaking screening exercises for breast and cervical cancer, HIV education and prevention activities from her days as First Lady.

According to Priscilla Santuo-Ocrah, Board Secretary of the Lordina Foundation, the organization will ensure that anyone who is identified with any symptons will be supported to undergo treatment.

She noted that cervical cancer is the second most frequent cancer among women in Ghana, after breast cancer, and is prevalent in women between the ages of 15 and 44 years.

Various studies have also shown that breast cancer is becoming common, and at very advanced stages, in younger women in Ghana than previously thought. According to a study into the risk factors and screening practices among future professionals in Ghana, published in June 2021, the reason for the detection of the cancer in its advanced stage in younger women is because of a “delay in seeking healthcare as a result of a lack of awareness of the disease at its early stage”.

The wife of the resident pastor in charge of the Ringway Estate Assemblies of God Church, Mrs. Grace Adjei, thanked Mrs. Lordina Dramani Mahama and her Foundation for the screening exercise and the health talk.
